사전적 가족의 개념은 보통 한집에 사는 사람들 즉 주로 부부를 중심으로 혼인, 혈연, 입양 등에 맺어진 친족 관계에 있는 사람들의 집단을 말합니다. 우리나라는 전통적 대가족의 시대를 지나고 핵가족 시대를 거치면서 지금은 1인 가족이 급속도로 증가하고 있습니다. 관계성에 의한 가족의 의미로 볼 때 1인 가족은 가족의 해체로 볼 수 있으며 이는 가족의 해체를 넘어 관계의 단절, 공동체의 해체로 이어지는 것으로 봅니다.
그렇다면 지금의 시대에 가족은 무엇일까요? 혼인 및 혈연관계가 아니더라도 함께 거주하고 생계를 공유하거나, 정서적 유대를 가지고 친밀한 관계라면 가족으로 인식한다는 보고가 있습니다. 이는 가족으로 포함하는 대상이 그만큼 넓어지고 있음을 보여줍니다. 이제 가족은 혈연적 가족에서 사회적 가족으로, 닫힌 체계에서 열린 체계로 재구조화되고 있습니다.
이번 전시는 국립군산대학교미술관, 경북대학교미술관, 제주대학교박물관이 '가족'이라는 대주제로 연합하여 기획한 옴니버스식 전시 프로젝트입니다. 이는 대구-군산-제주를 잇는 지역간 연대, 경북대-국립군산대-제주대를 잇는 대학간 연대, 미술관과 박물관을 잇는 기관간 연대를 통해 또 하나의 가족을 만들어 내고 그 안에서 가족에 대한 시·공간적 생각들을 융합하고 공유해 보고자 합니다.
"당신의 가족은 누구입니까?"
By definition, “family” generally refers to a group of people living together—usually centered on a married couple—connected by marriage, blood, or adoption. In Korea, the traditional era of extended families has passed, followed by the era of nuclear families, and today we are witnessing a rapid increase in single-person households. From the perspective of family as a network of relationships, the rise of one-person households can be seen as a disintegration of family itself, leading to ruptured relationships and the breakdown of community.
What, then, does family mean in our time? It is now recognized that even without marriage or blood ties, people who live together, share a livelihood, or maintain close emotional bonds may be regarded as family. This shows that the scope of what we understand as family has greatly expanded. Family is no longer confined to a closed system of blood relations; it is being reimagined as a social construct—an open and evolving system.
This exhibition is a collaborative project jointly organized by the Lee Kun Young Museum of Contemporary Art (Gunsan National University), the Art Museum of Kyungpook National University, and the Jeju National University Museum under the overarching theme of “family.” By connecting the regions of Daegu–Gunsan–Jeju, building solidarity among Kyungpook, Gunsan, and Jeju universities, and linking art and history museums, the project seeks to create yet another kind of family—one that fuses and shares spatial and temporal reflections on what family means today.
