Under the Paper 종이 아래
종이 아래(2022-2023) 프로젝트는 평등하지 못한 사회가 ‘코로나19’라는 재난을 만나 무너지는 과정에서 발생하는 문제를 조명하는 회화 시리즈다. 특히, 추모와 연대 없이 기술과 정치로 팬데믹에 맞선 공동체가 가장 먼저 풀어야 할 매듭은 무엇인지 살펴본다. 작가는 그림을 그릴 때 사용하는 ‘종이’에서 출발하여, 종이가 갖는 물성 그 자체의 단순함을 넘어 종이 서류 한 장으로 모든 것이 치환되는 사회적 현상과 한 장의 서류가 있어야만 스스로를 증명할 수 있는 소수자의 현실을 짚어낸다. 그리고 회복과 치유의 슬로건 아래 망각된 존재들을 소환하여 이들이 처한 문제를 가시화한다. 이로써 재난을 기점으로 더욱 붕괴된 공동체성을 재건하기 위해 잊지 말아야 할 가치는 무엇인지 질문한다.
Under the Paper (2022-2023) project is a series of paintings that highlights the problems that occur during the collapse of the unequal society upon the calamity of COVID-19. The project examines, in particular, the most urgent challenge to resolve for the community that faced the pandemic without tribute or solidary, but with technology and politics instead. The artist begins from the ‘canvas’ that the painters use to draw and goes beyond to the materiality of the paper and to the social phenomenon where a piece of paper signifies everything, and points out the reality of the marginalized who must have a piece of document to prove their existence. Then the artist summons the forgotten existences under the slogan of recovery and healing and visualizes the problems from which they suffer. As such, the artist questions the value to be reminded to reconstruct the further collapsed community-ness that the pandemic brought.
